Australia’s love of home grown drama is reflected in the program for this year’s SHORTS Film Festival (April 28 – May 5) with a third of the 60 films to be screened dedicated to the drama genre. The drama’s storylines and settings though are diverse with tales of an over the hill boxer, a conflict at a suburban skate park and a man struggling with life in the outback among the films being shown over the week-long festival. A new initiative, part of National Youth Week (April 13 – April 22, 2012), and launched this year by the SHORTS Film Festival is aimed at inspiring the next generation of up and coming South Australian filmmakers. Under the guidance of film industry leaders, a series of free master classes in filmmaking and production will be offered to South Australians aged 12 – 25. A moving drama about a Croatian refugee making a new life for herself in Australia, has won the 2011 Gold Shorts Awards at the SHORTS Film Festival. The story of Iskra, is the work of New South Wales Director and Screenwriter Lucy Gaffy. The film tackles the feelings of a refugee whose memories keep her distanced from her world.
